The Life of Elena Kojelis

Elena KojelisWith grieving hearts, the Kojelis family announces the passing of our dear wife and mother Elena on December 9 in Kaunas, Lithuania.  At the age of 87, the Lord thought it time to bring her home.

Elena Trumpaite was born on a farm near Paliepiai, Lithuania in 1920.  Hers was a large family – eleven siblings grew to adulthood.  After attending local schools, Mrs. Kojelis attended Vytautas Magnus University in Kaunas and had hoped for a career in education.  The outbreak of the Second World War and the calamities that ensued changed her life and those of her family and friends.  With the imminent return of the Soviet army, Mrs. Kojelis and her brother Vincentas decided to flee westward, joining thousands of other refugees in displaced persons camps of occupied Germany.

After the war, she came to the United States, settling in Los Angeles with distant relatives.  Her husband to be, Juozas, whom she had met in Germany, eventually joined her.  They created a modest household and saw the birth of their three children: Daina, Rasa and Linas.

Elena Kojelis was a loving and dutiful mother.  She was actively engaged in Lithuanian community education, cultural and social activities in Southern California.  Many friends of Lithuania and the Baltic States in Los Angeles remember her as a gracious hostess, welcoming writers, poets, artists, democracy activists and other good people to our home, all working for our common, and ultimately victorious cause – the regaining of independence by Lithuania in 1991.

Elena and Juozas returned in 2005for their golden years to Kaunas.
Her husband and three children, son-in-law Robert, granddaughters Alexa and Lina and numerous nieces and nephews and members of both the Trumpa and Kojelis family mourn her passing.

The Kojelis family asks that, in lieu of flowers, gifts be made in her memory to the Kojelis Family Fund for education, research and democracy at the U.S.- Baltic Foundation [501(c) 3].
