U.S.-Baltic Foundation

About the U.S.-Baltic Foundation

A national organization that unites all American friends of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, the U.S.- Baltic Foundation (USBF) develops and implements programs to strengthen democracy and free markets in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.  The Foundation also introduces the Baltics to new American audiences with a series of public affairs programs.  More than 4,000 American supporters have helped USBF, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit institution, raise over $9 million for programs to build key national institutions in the Baltics, including municipal government, independent media, schools of public administration and civil society organizations since 1990.  USBF has won grants from the Pew Charitable Trusts, Bradley Foundation, National Endowment for Democracy, the U.S. Agency for International Development and individual donors and corporate sponsors across the U.S. to provide professional training and exchange programs to accelerate the pace of reform.  Thousands of current and future Baltic leaders have benefited from these programs.  This work assisted the Baltic nations as they prepared to become members of NATO and the European, which they accomplished in 2003.

Leading professionals and experienced policy-makers, including five former U.S. Ambassadors to the Baltics, direct the activities of the Foundation.  USBF maintains a professional office in Washington, DC.

Today, USBF’s programs support worthwhile charitable activities in the Baltics and serve as an educational resource for U.S. policy-makers and the public.  Current programs include:

Ambassadors Council Speaker Series in the U.S. Capitol

Lithuanian Kaimas “Countryside” Youth Grant Program

“Estonia’s Singing Revolution” documentary film for U.S. public television

Stillman-Lack Fine Arts Scholarship Fund

U.S.- Baltic Trade & Tourism Promotion Events

This year, the new Kojelis Family Fund, the first donor-advised charitable fund at USBF, was launched with a $250,000 gift.  The Fund will provide scholarships to students in Lithuania who are committed to a career in public service and the principles of ethical, democratic government.
